The virus outbreak has brought many changes to how we live our lives, like the feeling of uncertainty, altered daily routines, financial pressures and social isolation. We may constantly worry about getting sick or about how long the virus might last. Information overload, rumours and misinformation can make our life feel out of control and make it unclear what to do.
During this time, a lot of us may experience stress, anxiety, fear, sadness and loneliness. Mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, can worsen. It is important to learn self-care strategies and get the care you need to help you cope. Self-care strategies are good for your mental and physical health and can help you take charge of your life. Take care of your body and your mind and connect with others to benefit your mental health.
Regular physical activity and exercise can help reduce anxiety and improve mood. Find an activity that includes movement, such as dance or exercise. Take this opportunity to attend our daily fitness classes. Choose a well-balanced diet. Avoid loading up on junk food. Limit caffeine as it can aggravate stress and anxiety.
Constant news about the virus from all types of media can heighten fears about the disease. Limit social media that may expose you to rumours and false information. Also limit reading, hearing or watching other news, but keep up to date with national and local recommendations and only register the accurate facts and news.
Choose to focus on the positive things in your life instead of dwelling on how bad you feel. Consider starting each day by listing the things you are thankful for. Maintain a sense of hope, work to accept changes as they occur and try to keep problems in perspective.
Positive affirmation is a phrase that you repeat over and over again in order to bring yourself comfort, calm and a positive outlook during this time.
Few affirmations that you could practise daily are :
“I breathe in relaxation, I breathe out tension”
“ I am attracting positive energy into my body”
“ I am sending love, hope, and healing into the world”
“ no matter what happens today, I will find joy and positivity”
“ I am in charge of how I feel today”
If a family member or friend needs to be isolated for safety reasons or gets sick and needs to be quarantined at home or in the hospital, come up with ways to stay in contact. This could be through electronic devices or the telephone. Keep checking on them and let them know you’re there for them.
While constantly looking out for others, take a pause and focus on your wellbeing too. Check on your mind and body.
